Mediating effects of trauma-related dysfunctional appraisals and self-stigma in the relationships of trauma severity and posttraumatic stress symptoms

|
This study examined the mediating effects of trauma-related dysfunctional appraisals and self-stigma in the relationships of trauma severity and posttraumatic stress symptoms in the early stage after trauma. One month after the disaster, the survey was conducted with 204 participants who had directly exposed the earthquake, and the data were tested with a structural equation model. The results showed that trauma-related dysfunctional appraisals and self-stigma had partial mediating effects on relations between trauma severity and posttraumatic stress symptoms. These findings mean that it may be helpful to intervene in trauma-related dysfunctional appraisals and self-stigma to reduce the posttraumatic stress symptoms of trauma survivors in early stage after trauma. Based on those results, implications and limitations of the current study and suggestions for further study were discussed.
